Discover Kabul Kabob & Grill

Walking into Kabul Kabob & Grill at 8939 San Ramon Rd, Dublin, CA 94568, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that locals quietly rely on. I first stopped by after a long workday, drawn in by the smell of sizzling meat drifting into the parking lot. The space isn’t flashy, but it’s warm and practical, the kind of diner where families, solo lunch regulars, and first-timers all seem equally comfortable scanning the menu.

What stands out immediately is how the kitchen handles Afghan cooking with care and consistency. The grilling process is visible and purposeful: meats are marinated for hours, then cooked over open flame to keep them tender while locking in flavor. I watched a cook brush skewers with marinade just before plating, a small step that makes a noticeable difference. According to culinary research shared by the Smithsonian’s food history programs, traditional Afghan kabobs rely heavily on spice balance rather than heat, and that philosophy clearly shows here.

The menu leans confidently into classics. Chicken kabob arrives juicy and lightly charred, while the beef option has a deeper, smoky edge. Lamb, often tricky when rushed, is slow-cooked enough to stay soft without losing structure. Portions are generous, especially when paired with rice seasoned with cumin and cardamom. One server explained that their rice method follows a rinse-and-steam process used across Central Asia, which reduces starch and keeps grains separate, something also recommended by food science studies published by the Journal of Culinary Science.

Beyond the kabobs, sides deserve attention. The flatbread comes warm and slightly blistered, ideal for scooping sauces. The yogurt-based dressing is tangy without being overpowering, and the chickpea dishes feel fresh rather than heavy. A fellow diner at the next table mentioned she orders takeout weekly because the food reheats well, which matches my own experience grabbing leftovers the next day without losing texture.

Reviews around town often describe the place as authentic comfort food, and that description fits. Online ratings consistently land in the high four-star range, reflecting steady satisfaction rather than hype-driven spikes. Data from major review platforms shows diners increasingly value consistency over novelty, and this restaurant clearly benefits from that trend. People come back because they know what they’re getting.

Cleanliness and food safety are also handled seriously. The dining area stays tidy even during lunch rush, and staff follow glove and handwashing protocols aligned with guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. While no restaurant is perfect, I haven’t seen issues raised in recent local inspections, which builds trust when choosing where to eat regularly.

One thing worth noting is that seating can feel tight during peak hours, especially weekends. If you’re sensitive to noise or crowds, an early dinner works better. That said, the staff moves orders efficiently, and wait times stay reasonable. The team clearly knows their workflow, from order intake to plating, which keeps service smooth even when the room fills up.

The location itself makes the spot convenient. Set along San Ramon Road, it’s easy to reach from nearby offices and residential areas, making it a popular lunch stop. I’ve overheard conversations from people driving in from neighboring cities specifically for this grill, which says a lot about its pull.

What keeps me recommending it isn’t just the food, but the feeling that care goes into each plate. It’s the kind of place where you’re likely to hear someone at the counter say worth the drive and mean it. For anyone exploring Afghan cuisine or simply looking for a reliable diner with depth and soul, this restaurant quietly earns its reputation through steady quality and honest cooking.

  • Chapli kebabs are perfectly seasoned and nicely balanced with ground beef, cumin, chillies, eggs, spices. It is very similiar with Korean Tteokgalbi in terms of shape, meat patty formation, texture. But the flavor is so different! Nice and fragrant, juicy, crispy outside at the same time. The dough of mantoo, bolani is nice and thin, so flaky!! Flatbread is stuffed with savory veggies and flavor-filled. It was served hot!! I think this is one of the best afghan restaurants in entire bay area. I love the authentic way they cook. I wish they would be nicer to have more spiciness to it.

  • I ordered lamb shank, chicken kabob, and beef kabob with palao for a takeout dinner, and the experience was fantastic. The service was fast, and the food was ready quickly, which made the process smooth and convenient. All the dishes were delicious—the lamb shank was tender, and the kabobs were flavorful and perfectly cooked. The palao complemented the meats really well, making for a satisfying meal. Overall, I was very impressed with both the quality of the food and the efficiency of the service. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be ordering from them again soon!

  • Halal Sign is posted on restaurant entrance. Verbally verified as well with the Afghan girl working there. Food is okay but less spicy. Nice sitting area for family.

  • Really nice food, home cooked taste. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and freshness of food here. It is run by a family. I think the wife cooks in the kitchen and the husband takes care of serving. A great example of making team work, quality ingredients and what comes out is home tasting food. Feels home away from home.

  • Our first time here. We ordered Combo Kabob & Borani Badanjan and they were so good that we finished everything. Highly recommended. They are a small business so don’t expect fancy atmosphere. But if you’re into delicious Afghanistan food, this is it. I wasn’t planning to post so didn’t take any pictures but I think the restaurant deserves some credit and nice review so I started writing.

  • Our first time trying the food. Ordered through Uber Food. The food was well prepared, good quality and quantity. The flavors were really good. We had a chicken kabob, Koobideh and the dumplings. Everything was great except that it was cold. I attribute the temperature to the driver making another stop before delivering mine.
